Most of us consider the hair as a crowning glory. That’s why many women spend on hair products and regular salon treatments. It's because we want to achieve healthy and lustrous strands of hair. Treatments help us achieve a desirable result. But, the condition of a treated hair doesn’t always have a lasting effect.

Treated or not, there is a certain basic hair care routine that helps us achieve fuller and shiny hair. Regardless of your hair type, these stellar routine tips are beneficial for your hair.

Restore your hair's former glory. Read on to learn about our must-know 20 tips in maintaining the beauty and lustre of your hair.

Understanding Our Hair Structure

Before we move on, let us first understand the basic structure of our hair. Then, we'll move towards the easiest part of maintaining our tresses.

We all know that the strands of our hair grow from a root that's anchored by hair follicles. The root of the hair is made out of cells of protein known as keratin. Keratin makes up our hair, skin and nails. To make the long and quite complex anatomy lesson short, our hair is made of proteins. With two distinct parts such as the root and hair shaft.

That’s why it’s essential to take care of your scalp and roots as much as the hair that grows out of them.

Tip #1 - Wear a comfortable hair scrunchie

We're huge believers that a comfortable hair scrunchie can make all the difference in promoting healthy hair growth. Try to avoid hair scrunchies that are excessively tight or scrunchies with materials that may irrate your hair.

If you're wearing scrunchies on a daily basis for work, the gym or for chilling out at home, choosing the most suitable scrunchie for each occassion can be crucial. We recommend either looking at oversized scrunchies or smaller, mini scrunchies to best suit each occasion. You will still be able to enjoy yourself, whilst also keeping your hair in great condition!

Tip #2 - Keep your scalp clean and healthy

We’ve learned that our hair is made out of cells that are also responsible for structuring our skin. Many women spend on skincare products to prevent dry and rough skin. And this concept also applies to our scalp

If we leave our scalp dirty, dry and rough – it can affect the health of our roots and may even put a stop to its growth. So, the first line of defence in maintaining healthy hair starts with a clean scalp.

For other hair problems such as dandruff or flaky scalp, speak to your dermatologist.

Tip #2 - Take extra care of your roots

Hair roots come in second after the scalp that needs extra care. That’s why it’s best to nourish them before washing your hair. By doing so, apply some all-natural products to your roots and massage.

Massaging your roots will stimulate blood circulation and vital nutrients throughout the scalp. Then, nourishing the hair shafts for healthy growth. Nourished roots will grow stronger, healthy and shiny strands.

Tip #3 Wash with lukewarm water

Hot baths help us feel relaxed. But, frequent scalding showers can damage our hair. Hot water strips off our hair's essential oils. As a result, it leaves our scalp feeling dry and dull. Wash with lukewarm water. Then, complete your shower with a nice frigid rinse to help close the hair cuticle.

Tip #4 - Listen to your hair

We all have heard about the frequent use of shampoo can lead to the loss of essential oils. And as a result, it makes our hair brittle and may interrupt the growing process.

Our hair benefits from frequent washing. It will reduce split ends – leaving it moisturised and shiny. What we often miss to consider is that we don’t listen to what our hair tells us. The next time your hair feels dirty or greasy, don’t hesitate to give it a nice shower.

Tip #5 - Proper use of hair conditioner

Know which part of your hair gets greasy. Usually, most women know that applying the conditioner to the roots can weigh down the hair. If this occurs to you, consider applying the conditioner from mid-lengths down to the ends. Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the conditioner and detangle your strands.

Tip #6 - Avoid towel drying

What every woman will do after taking a shower is to grab the towel and use it to remove excess water. Drying off with a towel has been a tradition for ages; one of the best hair tips we provide is to use an old cotton T-shirt.

That’s because a cotton t-shirt is gentle to the hair. First, squeeze the excess water, then dry it off using the cotton cloth.

Tip #7 Don’t wrap your hair with a towel

Creating a turban using our towel after washing our hair is a classic move we all have adapted to for ages. But, this is the quickest way to end up with dry and brittle hair. Pat dry or press your hair to soak or remove excess moisture.

Tip #8 - Minimise or ditch heat styling

Our hair is delicate and needs to be handled with care. And we have already established this statement earlier. But, let’s admit this fact that most women can never ditch heat styling.

Since we can’t keep ourselves from loving blowout hair, here's what you should do. Before blow-drying or curling – spray some heat protectant to your hair. And as much as possible, keep the heat styling tools in a low or medium setting.

Tip #9 - Air dry as much as you can

We all know that excessive heat styling can do more harm than good to your strands. Both the heat from the sun and our styling tools are our hair’s number one enemy. Try to break away from excessive blow-drying and consider air-drying your hair.

Tip #10 Trim your ends

It doesn’t matter if you’re growing out your hair. Regular trimming helps you grow healthy and luscious locks. Trimming prevents any split ends from travelling up the strand of your hair.

Split ends may lead to another problem which is the thinning of your hair. Get your hair split ends clipped to enhance the richness of your crowning glory.

Tip #11 - Healthy diet helps restore weak hair

What we eat plays a vital role in the lustre and growth of our hair. We’ve mentioned earlier that the building block of our hair is protein. To grow and improve the health of our hair, it’s best to include iron-rich foods.  And include Omega-3 fatty acids in our diet to stimulate our hair follicles.

Tip #12 - Boost your hair with supplements

To achieve rich, strong and shiny hair, boost it with supplements. Aside from our protein-rich diet, taking the right supplements will help stimulate growing healthy cells for our skin, hair and nails. But, if you want to see the desired effect, make sure to follow the daily need of your hair-boosting pills.

Tip #13 - Minimise hair breakage

Various things and bad habits can cause the weakening of our hair that may lead to breakage. And one of the most common things that will pop to mind is the use of elastic or a too-tight ponytail. But, friction during our sleep can also cause our hair to frizz. Try switching your cotton pillowcase with silk or satin to minimise hair breakage.

Tip #14 - Hydrate your hair

Well-hydrated tresses are happy and healthy strands. Whether you have curly or straight hair – this is the fundamental hair care tip for every hair type.

Aside from the nourishing hair products, keep your body hydrated. Drink plenty of water. A well-hydrated body promotes growth and strengthens your hair from roots to tips.

Water replenishes our dehydrated hair by inducing moisture in our cells. As a result, it will stimulate the cells normal functionalities.

Tip #15 - Avoid frequent switching of hair care products

Listen to your hair to know when you should switch your hair care products. Give your hair the time it needs to adapt. Our hair doesn’t know the difference between one product to the other. If you think the product works for your hair – then, stick with it.

Tip #16 - Switch your hairstyle

Don’t stress your hair by wearing the same hairstyle in a row. Change it and don’t forget to apply your trusted hair care products. When you’re up for a hair down kind of day, make sure to strengthen it with a shampoo and conditioner. If you want to wear it up, avoid elastic with metal and boost it with mousse or gel.

Tip #17 - Over-brushing weakens your hair

While it’s tempting to brush your tresses now and then to remove any tangles – don’t overdo it as it can weaken your hair. Frequent pulling or friction from brushing can stress your roots. As a result, it may even prevent them from growing.

Aside from that, over-brushing can lead to various hair issues such as acute hair loss and hair fall. Also, avoid over-brushing while the hair is still wet for the same reason that it weakens your hair.

Tip #18 - Use a wide-tooth comb

Soaking wet hair is susceptible to damage. But, if there’s the need to brush your hair, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle damp hair.

By doing so, split your hair into sections. Start at the ends and work your way up when detangling. If a wide-tooth doesn't work for you--try to use a detangler brush. But we recommend detangling your hair before you take a shower.

Tip #19 - Use the right amount of hair products

As we all know, overconsumption or excessive use of its required amount can cause damage. This idea also applies to our hair products. Excessive use of hair products in the wrong areas of the hair may cause product build-up to our scalp and roots.

When you shampoo, concentrate on the part where there’s oil buildup. Apply your conditioner where your hair is at its driest. Do this by starting at the mid-shaft then work your way down to the ends.

Tip #20 - Breathe and relax
