Many fur parents worry about their pets choking when they start running and tugging on their leashes. Dog collars place pressure and cause strain on their necks. On the other hand, a dog harness distributes the pressure on the body, making it, in most cases, the much safer and more effective alternative.

Like dog collars, a harness is a piece of wearable equipment for dogs. But, rather than being wrapped around the dog's neck, the harness consists of straps surrounding the dog's torso behind the front legs. This improves your dog's safety by reducing tension on their necks which could restrict proper breathing.

1. Better control over your dog

It can be challenging to control a big dog or one that has built a habit of pulling. And using a collar and leash alone is physically straining and risks causing a neck injury or tracheal collapse in dogs.

Hence, a harness is a better alternative. Since it's snugly wrapped around your dog's chest and body, the weight you have to pull becomes evenly distributed, allowing better and safer control over your dog.

2. Good support for aged dogs and dogs with orthopedic conditions

Aged dogs with orthopedic conditions might have difficulty getting up and getting around without experiencing much pain. Harnesses can be a great solution to these. 

3. Better safety for your pooch

A determined dog will find ways to escape from its collar. This can be potentially dangerous in many ways. But, with a dog harness? Everything is safer and easier as they are perfectly snugged in through straps.

Front-clip Dog Harnesses

Front clips are designed to discourage pulling by pivoting your dogs towards you when the lead is taut. It is typically a Y-shaped design that lays horizontally on their chests which is non-restrictive and allows more movement.

Back-clip Dog Harnesses

Back clips are a little more versatile and allow you to manage your pet with a more frontal grip. It has a ring at the top for leash attachment, so the lead is focused on the dog's back. This is especially used for small dogs with delicate throats. Also, the lead doesn't tangle under their front legs, unlike collars and front clips.

Most harnesses are specifically made to discourage pulling. With this, you can have better control over your dog and improve your pup's leash skills. Yes, it can deter on its own. But ideally, you must teach them that a loose leash is the only way they can move forward and that a tight leash means they need to stop.

Give your pooch some soft pats and treats, too!

It depends on the type of walks you're aiming for. Both back and front D-rings allow you to increase or decrease the control as needed, providing you with perfect control of the pace of your walk.

But, for effective loose leash walks training, it is best to use the front D-ring since it discourages pulling by pivoting your dogs towards you when the leash is taut. However, if your dog is pretty confident walking on a leash, then the less restricting back D-ring would do just fine.

Your dog can wear their harness in the car. In fact, combining a dog seat belt with a suitable harness can provide the ultimate safety while travelling outdoors.

A reminder to all fur parents, restraining your dog will not only protect them, but it will also protect you and the other passengers. After all, all legalities aside, driving with your pets unrestrained can be distracting. Simply put, they don't belong in our laps nor beside us when we're driving while they're moving freely.

Also, pairing a dog seatbelt with a harness is advisable, but not with a dog collar. Such can pose choking hazards and other serious problems to your pup since the force is only focused on their necks.

Have fun mixing and matching!

Like any accessory, dog harnesses also fall victim to your dog's playful nature. A dive in mud or sweat under summer heat could eventually deteriorate a harness. Hence, keeping them in good condition is a must. But, you have to do it properly.

NALZO recommends hand washing using warm water with mild soap or a spot wipe instead. Machine wash and tumble dry is highly discouraged.

If it's too tight, it could hurt your dog due to friction. If it's too loose, your pup may wiggle its way out and escape. Hence, the fitting should be a priority in choosing a harness.

As a rule of thumb, a dog harness is considered a good fit when you can insert two fingers between your dog and the harness. Sizing guides are also available to measure your dog's neck and chest areas accurately.
