A dog collar is a piece of material strapped around the dog’s neck. They are typically worn by dogs for training, walking, identification, or even a fashion statement. Collars are often used with a leash for restraining a dog.

Most dog collars are made of nylon and polyester that come with plastic or metal buckles. They are available in a wide variety of designs, styles and patterns.

Seeing the perfect piece that flaunts and adds up to your dog’s personality is nothing but delightful. But, you can’t forget the most important aspect of a collar — your dog’s comfort and security. 

Dog collars are essential because they allow you to have good control over your dogs when you’re out walking with a leash. This protects your dogs from dangerous circumstances and other people as well. You can also attach a dog tag to their collars with their details for safekeeping in case they run away and get lost. 

Furthermore, collars can also make training easier as they allow you to direct and manage their behaviours with gentle tugs on the leash. 

Dog collars are incredibly important to ensure safety and peace of mind in any situation your dog gets loose or lost. But, keeping it on all day, especially unsupervised, can pose risks and negative effects on your pups. 

The collar, when worn 24/7, can be uncomfortable for your fur baby. The material will constantly rub on their neck and eventually tear off hair and coat, exposing the skin that can lead to skin problems. Thus, always check the material before purchasing.

Also, dogs are playful by nature. If they play roughly while left unattended, they can get caught on something, which can cause serious injuries. It is also not advisable to wear collars and attach a seat belt to them while inside the car. This can elevate the risk of choking in a chance of accidents and sudden stops. Use a dog harness, instead.

Collars are more convenient on walks. However, dogs tend to pull or tug on their leashes when they get attracted to something. In this case, dog harnesses are the best option. They don’t put pressure on their necks, minimising the risk of choking and struggling.

But, if your dog does not usually pull or is trained with a loose leash walk, then you can easily go with dog collars. 

When fitting a dog collar, it should not be loose enough to slip over the dog’s head nor so tight as to restrict breathing. To ensure the best fit for your dog, we suggest that you measure their neck where the collar naturally sits using a tape measure prior to purchase.
