Regular physical activity and proper conditioning are important factors in improving overall human health. Physical fitness not only improves one's health but also adds years to one's life. This is a phrase we've heard a couple of lifetimes, which also applies to our four-legged friends.

We're all aware of how much our pets enjoy going for walks. Some dogs may even recognise when it's time to go home and attempt to persuade you not to. Aside from the frequency of walks, did you know there are a few other things we know before walking our pets?

Before you put on your dusty running shoes, keep reading to learn about some important pet-walking do’s and don’ts.

Do’s and Don’ts of Dog Walking

Owning a dog isn't as simple as picking out some toys from the store. That's why it's critical to conduct thorough research before getting a pet. However, if you have one, you may need to include these crucial details on your list.

  • Always bring a plastic bag with you and clean up after your pet.
  • Keep your canine best friend under control at all times.
  • Supervise your pet around young children

Aside from the aforementioned list, did you know that failing to walk your dog may result in a fine? So, it's best to check your local council's pet-walking policies.

How Often Should I Walk My Dog?

Depending on the breed of our dog, we should walk it at least three to four times per day for at least 15 minutes. However, we must also consider your pet's age, as it may be unable to meet the demand. But, if you can't keep up with the demand, aim for a 30-minute walk five (5) times per week

No matter how small or large your dog pets are, they require exercise to stay mentally and physically fit. Walking them every day is one of the most beneficial exercises you can give them.

Dogs who aren't stimulated enough become anxious and, in some cases, destructive. So, regardless of your dog's size and breed, make sure to allow your best friend to see beyond the four corners of your house.

And before taking your canine companion for a walk, you must prepare yourself also by stretching your back and arms.

How Long Should I Walk My Dog For?

First, determine the breed of your pet. This is due to the fact that different breeds have different walking requirements or tolerance. Some dogs can walk for 15 minutes, while others can hike for two hours or more.

That’s why you have to consider the following factors of your canine including:

  • Age: Generally, younger dogs have more energy and require more exercise than middle-aged and senior dogs.

  • Size: Walking a smaller dog once a day is sufficient, whereas larger dogs require more than one. However, there are some small dogs, such as terriers, that require a lot of exercise.

  • Energy or Activity Level: The differences in age and size will have an effect on your pet's activity levels. Aside from that, each dog has a unique set of needs and limitations based on its breed.

  • Health: Healthy dogs of any age, size, or breed can go for walks. And can be gradually increased.

  • Availability: One of the most important factors in determining our dog's tolerance for walking is our time.

  • In general, you should take your dog for a walk once per day. You can also keep track of the following times:

    • Three to four times per day, for at least 15 minutes
    • In dogs with high energy levels are recommended four (4) 20-to-25-minute walks per day
    • Smaller dogs with a quick temper should be given 20 to 25 minutes three times a day

When is the Best Time to Walk My Dog?

Always keep the weather in mind when taking your pet for a walk. Even a healthy person cannot walk outside in the heat of the sun or during a heavy downpour. But, ideally, it’s best to take your furry buddy for a walk in the morning.

But for some reason, many pet owners are still unsure of the best time to take their dogs for a walk. Let's sift through the different times of day to find the best time to take your dog for a walk.

    Morning

Mornings are the best time for long dog walks. This is due to the fact that it allows our pets to relieve themselves after a long period of sleep. Furthermore, mornings allow our dogs to burn off some energy early in the day.

However, if you live in a cold climate and have an elderly dog, you may need to wait until the sun warms the area.

    Afternoon

A walk in the afternoon is ideal for senior dogs, especially during the colder months. However, avoid afternoon walks during the summer because they can be harmful to your dog's health.

    Evening

Some pet owners prefer night walks because they are unable to take their pets out in the morning. Perhaps the heat is too much for you and your pet during the day, so you go for nightly walks. However, you should take extra precautions because your pet may be prone to unfortunate incidents.

Is walking your dog not enough?

If you believe that walking your dog is not enough, or if you are unable to walk your dog, consider a different form of exercise. Enrichment toys, for example, can be found at your local pet store or on the internet.

It's also a good idea to seek professional help so that you can make the most of your dog's abilities.
